SOUTH SIDE MUSKIE HAWKS
CHAPTER REPORT – JANUARY, 2012
The January meeting of the South Side Muskie Hawks was brought to order by
President John Daley on Wednesday, January 18th. We had several guests and some
new members in attendance due to our combined efforts at the Chicago Muskie
Show. A SPECIAL THANKS goes out to all of those who signed up to work the show,
including Pete Barber III, Paul Miletich, Larry Konieczka, Al Buvelot, Ron Rodak, Bob
Arnony, Rick Noerenberg, Lynn Polyak, John Daley, Bob Strnad, Debbie Strnad, Tim
O’Connell, Mike Blazek, Denise Riedl, Deb Niemiec, Alex Niemiec, Chloe, Niemiec,
Ian Niemiec, Sean Kays, Dave Lundgren, Les Feher, and Tom Pavlowski. Jack Frost
also signed up to work the show, but unfortunately was ill and could not do it.
Without the hard work and dedication of these people, our success at the show
would not be possible. By working at these shows, you are helping your club! Any
money we collect in ticket sales goes into our treasury and helps to pay for speakers
and other things that you enjoy. Besides, working these shows is fun. You get to talk
to all kinds of people, see old friends, view the exhibits at the show, listen to some
of the seminars, and maybe buy some new tackle. We only participate in two shows
per year, the Chicago Muskie Show, and the Tinley Park Fishing Show, so please
think about signing up to work one or both of them next year, as we need all of the
help we can get, especially on Fridays and Sundays at the Muskie Show.
In other news, there were no fishing reports at this meeting, so John
Immediately moved on to sending around the sign-up sheet for those wishing to
work the booth at the Tinley Park Fishing Show on February 11th and 12th. While
the sheet was being passed around, we also sold tickets for mini-raffle for which the
drawing will be held at our Swap Night on April 18th.
After the tickets were sold, John launched his talk covering the basics of ice
fishing, stressing safety on the ice. He said that he will no go out on ice that is less
than four inches thick, and that to doing so is foolhardy as you never know where
there might be a week spot where current is stronger and the ice may not be as
thick. He also stressed dressing properly for the occasion, and carrying a few life-
saving devices with you in case you fall through the ice. He showed a device that is
relatively inexpensive, but lets you pull yourself back up on to solid ice. This device
is worn around your neck and has two spikes in the ends of it that you can poke into
the ice to give yourself some leverage in crawling out. In addition, he showed
another inexpensive product called ‘Yaktrax’ that you just attach to your boots,
and it allows you to walk safely on the ice.
John also talked about electronics a little, mentioning and demonstrating the
use of flashers, cameras, and GPS devices. He gave a detailed description of how a
well-known guide in the area uses a GPS and side scan sonar to locate brush piles
under the ice, so that he can return to them regularly with little room for error.
After he finished talking about all of the safety devices and the electronics,
John touched equipment and techniques, talking about tip-ups and various choices
of rods, line, and jigs. He also mentioned that he does not use a four-wheeler to get
out on the ice, but chooses to park his vehicle on the shore and walk from there,
pulling his gear on a sled behind him. A brief question and answer session followed
his talk.
It was then time to have our monthly raffle, and for once the chief whiner,
Don Sobczak was not whining because he was too busy winning, even though he
tried to deny it. Keep trying, Don; you may succeed one of these days (yeah, right).
We also had some winners among the new members. Let’s see how long it takes
them to become whiners when they stop winning!
As far as upcoming events are concerned, February 15th marks the date of our
next meeting. This meeting will be held at Basa Marine, which is located on North
Frontage Road about a mile east of Rt. 53 in Bolingbrook. The guest speaker for this
meeting will be Jeff from Temple Bay Lodge. Hot Dogs and possibly hamburgers will
be served, along with some trimmings, and cakes and chocolate-covered pretzels
will be served for dessert. Pop and water will be available to drink, and a raffle will
be held. Come out and join us for a meeting that is always fun!
Our March meeting will be held on March 21st back at our usual meeting place
at Vince’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, 6217 West 63rd Street (63rd and Melvina) in
Chicago. This meeting will be our Awards Night, when the fishermen, women, and
children who caught and released the most fish and the biggest fish during the past
year, will receive their awards. Handling the duties of passing out the awards will
be Sean Kays, our fishing contest chairman.
Our April meeting will be held on April 18th, and that will be our annual Swap
Night, where you can usually find several good bargains. However, there will be no
sales until the go-ahead is given, and then you have to move fast to secure that
item that you had your eye on. You can do all of the looking that you want ahead of
time, but once the sale actually begins, it’s first come, first served. The April
meeting will also be when we have the drawing for the mini-raffle and all of those
nice trips and the Loomis muskie rod will be given away, so get your tickets before
then. Tickets will be available at the Tinley Park Fishing Show and at our February
and March meetings.
The South Side Muskie Hawks, a chapter of Muskies, Inc., is a multi-species
fishing club composed of men, women, and children. We are a family-oriented and
welcome new members at any time. Our yearly activities include working at sports
shows, having speakers, fishing trips, a swap night, a February cook-out, a picnic, a
Christmas Party, and an awards night. Local fishing trips are also arranged from
time to time between members. We have a great group of people and have a lot of
fun, so why not come out and join us? Our meetings are held at 7PM on the third
Wednesday of every month except July, when everyone is out fishing. We normally
meet at Vince’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, which is located at 6217 West 63rd Street
(63rd and Melvina) in Chicago. Food is served at all meetings, so you can come
straight from work! We hope to see you at our next meeting!
